My work is about peace, quiet and sanctuary in an ever “noisier” world. The work is made using the Mariposa knot stitch, a traditional Native American basketry stitch. My materials are waxed linen and reed, which I usually stain, paint or color in some way. For many years, I have been concerned with layers of baskets or baskets within baskets, but now I have started to explore the use of multiples and repetition of many smaller baskets together, sometimes adding bits of natural materials such as birch bark, acorns, walnuts and twigs. These natural materials are special to me, usually gathered during my walks in different locations, from suburban Maryland and the shores of Lake Michigan to the Colorado Mountains.
